YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Bear with us puppies. Your Mama's momma is in town with our wild auntie Jennie who kept us up all night determined to show us every lipstick, stick of gum and wadded up piece of paper in her damn purse. So we're a bit slower than usual this morning. Plus, our dear auntie is getting really demanding about schlepping her down to Hollywood Boulevard so that she can buy a new pair of Lucite stilettos to wear to her 40th high school reunion dance that's going to be on the Carnival Cruise line. So today, we're regret to inform, it's just the fact maam.
In November of 2007, Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress actress Julianna Margulies (E.R., The Good Wife) married New York City attorney Kieth Lieberthal. At the time of their Massachusetts ceremony, Miz Margulies was 7 months preggers with a child conceived in love and sin. They spent their honeymoon in the birthing unit at Lenox Hill Hospital** and then settled with baby into her apartment in Soho–or at least that's where we assume they settled.
We assume they settled in New York City because at the time the couple got hitched, according to the L.A. Times, the ringlet maned Miz Margulies was leasing her Spanish style casa in Santa Monica, CA to Emmy nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Kyra Sedgewick and her Golden Globe winning husband Kevin Bacon.
In September of 2008, Miz Margulies listed the house, which is located in a prime, mid-block north of Montana Avenue, with an asking price of $4,500,000. After a couple of price chops, the pretty property was taken off the market in January of 2009 and recently re-listed in mid-February of 2010 for a significantly lower asking price of $3,250,000
Property records show Miz Margulies bought her house in Santa Monica in October of 1996–at the tail of of her six long years on the E.R. program–for $1,395,000. Property records Your Mama peeped at show that there are 6 bedrooms and 3 poopers in 3,235 square feet. However, listing information, which does not indicate a square footage, indicates there 3 bedrooms and 2.5 poopers in the main house and another 1 bedroom and a pooper in the detached guest house above the garage.
The house is approached through a walled and gated courtyard for privacy and the interior spaces include a formal living room with white walls, dark chocolate stained hardwood floors, a fireplace and a vaulted wood-beamed ceiling. Beyond the living room is the formal dining room and beyond that a small family room with French doors that open to the back yard and a second fireplace flanked by built in shelves and cabinetry.
The dark hardwood flooring continues into the renovated kitchen that has gleaming white cabinetry, even shinier, commercial grade stainless steel appliances and lavishing chunky Carrara marble counter tops. The kitchen counter top extends into the breakfast room where a couple of low, open shelves display family photos and artwork. The rough hewn farmhouse table and benches was, in Your Mama's utterly meaningless opinion, an excellent choice that successfully stops the room from looking like a sterilized surgical suite.
The children will note that the home office, painted a yellowy-greeny color with circus striped curtains, has built in shelving where someone–either Miz Margulies or Miz Sedgwick–has placed an Emmy award. We don't know whose Emmy it is because we don't know if the day-core in the listing photos belongs to the Bacon/Sedgewicks or the Margulies/Lieberthals.
The itty-bitty backyard is well hedged for privacy and includes a dining terrace with Spanish pavers and an adjacent deck. A rectangular swimming pool has been squeezed in the slim space between the terraces at the back of the house and the detached garage and guest house. While we're quite sure some of the children will moan and groan about how a three million dollar house should have more backyard than this or that for three and some million clams you can have 40-acres a mule and a mansion in Mississippi, but as far as Your Mama is concerned, this is about all the back yard we'd ever need or want. But we're funny that way. We like compact but well-organized spaces, which probably says more about our psyche than we'd like to admit.
Anyhoo, in New York City, Missus and Mister Margulies own a 1,529 square foot condo on West Houston Street they bought in October of 2004 for $2,395,000. Property records show that like so many New Yorkers of means, the Lieberthal/Margulies family also own a weekend getaway. In their case, it's a bucolic upstate New York spread with 100-ish acres in Livingston that they purchased in July 2008 for $2,450,000.
**Use them little brains of yours bunnies. Your Mama does not know where Miz Margulies gave birth to her baby boy nor are we serious about them spending their honeymoon in the hospital. We don't have any idea if or where they honeymooned and, frankly, we don't really care.
